Teaching cafe
We take pride in our teaching café at Tuck Shop Coffee Society. While we provide coffee and simple food items like most cafes do, we offer much more than delicious specialty coffee beverages. Every visit to our teaching café is an opportunity to partake in an educational specialty coffee experience. Other than learning about specialty coffee from our knowledgeable baristas, you will find different sensory aids in our teaching café to help you understand different coffee concepts and equipment, as well as the coffees served to you. During our teaching café’s opening hours, we invite you to slow down, take a moment to relax in our peaceful cafe, and mindfully savour our specialty coffee prepared in accordance with principles and standards recommended by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA). Other than serving as an SCA classroom on weekends, our teaching café is where “Brew-it-your-way” sessions and “Coffee Chat” events are held. “Brew-it-your-way” sessions are affordable 30-min appointments on weekday afternoons, during which one or two customers may experience brewing coffee with an equipment of their choice. Equipment available for selection include home espresso machines, prosumer espresso machines, lever espresso machines, pourover setup, and French press. Booking a session involves paying the applicable equipment fee ($2-20, depending on the equipment in question) and purchasing coffee beans (and milk, if desired). We provide equipment-specific brewing advice during the 30-min appointment but leave you with enough time to experiment with the equipment of your choice. “Coffee chats” are weekly 2-hour events that happen in late afternoon (eg 5:30-7:30pm), may be booked in advance for free or a small fee (eg $5), have a limit of 10 participants per event, and are friendly gatherings that welcome anyone who wishes to connect and make friends over free-flow specialty coffee or tea. Some Coffee Chats will have a theme (eg cupping night, lever fever), others will simply be an occasion to enjoy great coffee and great company.
