Service Description
Sensory Skills — Foundation Hook: Your palate is better than you think. It just needs training. Who it's for: Baristas, roasters, buyers and enthusiasts who want a reliable way to describe what they taste. No experience assumed. What you'll do: A practical, interactive day on how perception actually works — what happens between the cup and the judgement, and where that process can be trusted or fooled. You'll identify the five basic tastes blind before meeting them in coffee, work through acidity, bitterness and mouthfeel in paired samples, explore the Coffee Taster's Flavor Wheel using aroma references, and then cup using both the SCA Descriptive and Affective Forms — learning the difference between describing a coffee and preferring one. It is a day of concentrated tasting, and most people are surprised by how much sharper they are at the end of it. Logistics Duration: 1 day — SCA minimum 7 hours; Tuck Shop teaches 7–8 hours Level: Foundation Prerequisites: none (Introduction to Coffee recommended) Assessment: 25-question written exam, 27 minutes, 60% to pass. No practical exam, but your instructor completes a Course Skills Report on your practical work. Certificate: SCA Sensory Skills Foundation Class size: up to 8 · Price: $500
